Blancpain, with a heritage dating back to 1735, is renowned for its high-quality timepieces, especially in the realm of diver watches. While Omega, Rolex, and Panerai are well-known for their impressive diver’s watches, Blancpain holds a unique position as the creator of the first watch with standard dive specifications in the 1950s, designed for military use the Fifty Fathoms.
The Blancpain Bathyscaphe Chronograph Flyback from the Fifty Fathoms collection is a standout diver’s timepiece that deserves attention. What sets it apart is its refined design, featuring a case entirely crafted from black ceramic, including the unidirectional bezel, green bezel insert, chronograph pushers, and screw-down crown.
Measuring 43.6mm in diameter and 15.25mm in thickness, the watch feels light on the wrist, thanks to the ceramic case and sapphire crystal on both the top and bottom. The sail cloth straps has a rubber lining for strength and moisture protection but it also contributes to the comfortable fit. The black ceramic pin buckle adds durability, being highly resistant to scratches.
Under the sapphire crystal, the sunburst green dial showcases a running seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock, along with two sub-dials for the chronograph (12-hour counter at 9 and 30-minute counter at 3). The Flyback complication allows for restarting the chronograph seamlessly. A date window between 4 and 5 o’clock adds practicality, utilizing a dark green disc with white Arabic numerals.
For optimal timekeeping, the watch features applied hour markers, large minute and hour hands, and Superluminova on all components for enhanced visibility in the dark. Powering this impressive diver’s watch is the caliber F385, an automatic chronograph movement with 322 parts which includes large rotor ensuring a 50-hour power reserve. The movement boasts various features, including hacking seconds, an anti-magnetic silicone hairspring, full balance bridge, and a column wheel with a vertical clutch for the flyback chronograph—all housed in a case with a water resistance rating of 300 meters.
